We don’t consider our crew employees; after all, some of us have known each other all our lives. We are ‘ohana. There’s one obvious characteristic of our ‘ohana: Enthusiasm. Whether it’s for the Na Pali coast, the ocean or for the Hawaiian culture, our ‘ohana is one passionate group. That means you’re sure to have a good time as you get swept up in the energy. And while all our crew is CPR-certified and lifeguard-trained (in fact, they need to swim very, very well and be able to free dive a minimum of 40 feet below the surface); and that’s not the extent of our training.
Captains We have long-time, Coast Guard-licensed captains who know the unique waters around Na Pali Coast, so you’ll feel completely safe as they navigate the coast. What’s more, they study the latest research findings and published materials on the legend and lore along Na Pali Coast—after all, they are your tour guide, too.
Experts We have marine experts, some of whom studied at the University of Hawaii and are marine biologists, so you’ll learn textbook facts about our marine life. Like did you know the White-Spotted Pufferfish hides in a hole when threatened and can inflate to the size of a cantaloupe? Have you ever seen the underside of the pectorals of the grey-colored hump of a Devil Scorpionfish? They’re as colorful as a Monarch butterfly.
Kumu And when it comes to the Hawaiian culture and language, we have our very own kumu hula (master teacher of hula) who grew up dancing hula and now guides a hula troupe and is also renowned for her ’oli (chanting).
Koko You might say, as we oftentimes do, “It’s in the koko (blood).” Our ‘ohana grew up dancing hula, toddling along on grandfather’s fishing boat and surfing our epic waves. They also grew up hearing the stories handed down from kupuna (elders). That research and experience is priceless. We share it with you, because we want our Hawaiian culture to live on.
